IELTS vs PTE vs TOEFL vs Duolingo: Which English Test Should You Actually Take?

Most comparison articles give you a giant feature table. Here's the one question that actually decides it: what is the score for?

If you're weighing up IELTS against PTE, TOEFL or Duolingo, the honest answer is that the "best" test isn't fixed — it depends entirely on what the score is actually for. Acceptance rules, not test quality, are usually the real deciding factor.

Check the accepted-test list before comparing anything else

Government visa routes are the strictest layer of this decision. UK visa routes that require a Secure English Language Test (SELT) accept IELTS for UKVI specifically — not the Duolingo English Test, and not standard PTE Academic. Canada's Student Direct Stream currently accepts IELTS only. If your score has to satisfy a government requirement, confirm the exact accepted-test list for that specific route before booking anything.

Where the four tests genuinely differ

IELTS is the one test with a real human examiner for Speaking (in person or by video call), and the one most consistently found on government visa lists. PTE Academic is fully AI-scored and usually fastest for results. TOEFL iBT leans academic-lecture style and is historically strongest for US graduate admissions. Duolingo is fully online, adaptive, and by far the cheapest and fastest — but weakest of the four for government visa routes specifically.

Is IELTS harder than PTE, TOEFL or Duolingo?

Not inherently — the tests measure similar skills differently. IELTS's live human-scored Speaking section is what most candidates find more pressure-inducing than speaking alone into a microphone, which is a real difference in experience, not difficulty.

Which test gives results fastest?

PTE Academic and the Duolingo English Test are generally fastest, often within 1-2 days. Computer-delivered IELTS usually takes a few days.

Can I take the cheapest test instead of IELTS if it's required?

Only if your specific visa route or institution actually accepts it — this is the most common expensive mistake, since acceptance rules are the real constraint for government routes specifically.

If IELTS is required, where should I focus my prep first?

Whichever section is genuinely your weakest — most candidates guess wrong about this without a real diagnostic.
