IELTS Academic vs General Training: Which One Do You Actually Need?
Get this wrong and it isn't a small mistake — Reading and Writing are meaningfully different between the two versions, and a school, employer or visa office asking for one won't accept the other.
The short version: IELTS Academic is for university-level study or professional registration (medicine, nursing, engineering and similar regulated professions). IELTS General Training is for immigration, work, or secondary education in an English-speaking country. Listening and Speaking are identical in both — the difference is entirely in Reading and Writing.
How to know which one you need
Applying to a university or degree programme — you need Academic. Applying for permanent residency, a skilled worker visa, or general immigration points — you almost certainly need General Training, the version most points-based immigration systems accept for non-academic routes. Applying for secondary school (not university) — usually General Training, though this varies by institution. Not sure which your specific route requires? What's actually different
Reading: Academic uses three long passages from academic-style journals and books, with complex, abstract arguments. General Training uses shorter, everyday texts — ads, notices, workplace documents — that get progressively harder, with the third passage approaching Academic-level difficulty. Writing: Academic Task 1 asks you to describe a chart, graph, table or diagram. General Training Task 1 asks you to write a letter responding to an everyday situation. Task 2 (the essay) is broadly similar in both.
Because Reading and Writing content genuinely differ, practice materials aren't interchangeable — training on the wrong version wastes real time.

Is IELTS Academic harder than General Training?
